"생동감 넘치는 이누이트들의 고래 사냥이 곽훈 작가의 과감하고 활력 있는 필치를 통해 안양천에 펼쳐진다."
곽훈은 국제적인 미술 쇼케이스인 '베니스 비엔날레'의 한국관 제1회 작가로서 한국에서의 이력을 시작한다. 그를 먼저 알아본 곳은 낯선 땅 '미국'이었다. 이화 여고의 미술 교사로 재직하다가 미국으로 이주한 후 현지에서 입학한 미술 대학교의 학생 시절, 유명 갤러리에서 개인전을 열게 되었다. 그리고 '엘에이 타임즈'의 유명 평론가의 지지로 단숨에 인기 작가로 발돋음했다.
한국에 돌아와 작업을 이어가고 있는 그는 주로 동양의 사상과 철학을 담고있는 표현주의적인 회화와 실험적인 설치 작업을 하고 있다. 스튜디오에 들어서면 켜켜히 가득 쌓여있는 캔버스가 그의 지치지 않는 열정과 에너지를 말해준다.
그의 눈빛은 여전히 총명하고 새로운 것을 찾아 반짝인다. 자기 체제가 굳어져 버린 여느 작가들과는 달리 도전을 두려워하지 않으며, 여전히 앞으로 나아가는 꿈을 가지고 있다. 그렇기에 고래처럼 거대한 몸짓에도 불구하고 작은 천에서 헤엄치기를 사양하지 않는 것이다.
이번 가상 갤러리 중 '안양천변'에는 곽훈이 최근 천착해온 '할라이트' 시리즈, 일명 고래잡이 그림들이 전시될 것이다. 이누이트의 원시 고래 사냥에서 영감을 얻어 그려오던 그림들이다. 알레스카 토착민들의 생사를 건 사냥에서 빠져드는 영적 무아지경 상태와 자연과의 물아일체적 심상을 거침없는 붓질로 표현했다.
